There Are Some Terrific Love Songs Out There

Love songs and modern romance

There never used to be real love songs. It's hard to imagine, but there was once a time when a marriage was more of alliance between two families than a road to any sort of real happiness. People were expected to learn to love someone, that or simply put up with and live with whatever faults the other person had. Believe it or not, some people did find happiness in these situations, which were based on anything but true love, but more often than not it left both parties unhappy.

A turning point with love songs

Luckily, there came a time when a marriage wasn't enough and people began an earnest pursuit of love. It was, as we now call it, the start of the Age of Chivalry and Courtly love. Bards would travel from court to court entertaining with early love songs, that were essentially poems set to music. These became widely popular as did the idea of romance. People were sick and tired of their lives being so devoid of love and romance and this change is reflected in many of those early love songs.

This shift in attitudes towards love took place in the 16th century, when many of the European courts were at their zenith. As moving as many of the love songs were, many were actually commissioned pieces and do not represent the singer's feelings, but rather that of the person who paid the bard to come up with the song. These musical love spells began to be cast by crooners everywhere, with some results that were shocking and passionate.

Most of the love songs were sung in praise of a particular person that was the object of he writer's desire.

What every love song does tell us precisely is that there was a major shift in attitudes at the time, which spoke volumes about our innate longing for love and romance. They also spoke openly of the pain of lost and unrequited love, as we well know, you cannot have the excitement and passion of love without, at least once, felling the sting of rejection and heartbreak. Although they were a far cry from modern day country love songs, they actually share much of the same emotions.
